Crafts for Children

“Jo is amazing at understanding how things are made and rewriting wordy instructions to make them quick and easy to understand.”

— Renée Schwarz, writer, artist and craft designer

As the longtime writer and editor of children’s crafts for Canadian Living magazine, I was delighted to be the regular recipient of photographs from kids, parents and teachers, showing us just how much they had enjoyed the projects. (The picture of one happy class brandishing their five-minute kites, below, was provided by Austen Gilliland.)

When I’m designing and writing any how-to piece for kids — or assigning and editing one by another designer — I ensure that the listed materials are economical (recycled and free is even better), available, appropriate and complete, and that the method is the least-complicated but best way to achieve a successful and satisfying result for the maker. I also build in fun facts and reader takeaway such as good books and online resources for the children, parents and — especially — teachers.space
