Gardening

I’m lucky enough to share a field-size garden in Ontario’s limestone-rich Grey County, which lets me experiment with all kinds of planting, pruning and cultivating of both native and imported species. My pesticide-free patch now embraces perennial and cutting gardens, vegetable and herb plots, a small orchard, a trio of struggling grapevines, a meadow, and growing groves of trees dug in as spindly seedlings. These days this bit of land bears fruit beyond apples — more snakes, bugs, butterflies, bees, birds and other wildlife are finding a home here, thanks to the native plantings, and I keep learning more about gardening as I go.
